Our History

Ganief Abrahams’ greatest achievement during his lifetime was to establish a masjid in Genadendal and Greyton during 2016 - 2021. Boeta Ganief (raḥimahullāh) was a person who loved his Creator very much to the extent that he loved to give Da’wah. His passion and sincerity for Da’wah during his lifetime made him the person who he really was, up till the end of his last days in hospital, where he even gave Da’wah to a person who was also hospitalised.

This all became evident in the year 2016 when he went out in jamāt in the last ten days of Ramaḍān. The jamāt stayed at the Caledon Masjid and moved further on to Hermanus Masjid and some other towns in the Overberg region as well. It is here where he decided while on jamāt to explore the region a bit further. He was an adventurer and explorer, he loved to explore the unknown and loved the outdoors as well. Through his quest to explore the vicinity, he stumbled upon the two towns, Genadendal and Greyton.

Later in 2017, he decided to revisit Genadendal and Greyton and found that no masjid ever existed in both these two towns. The result of this was that a few Muslims became murtad and turned to Christianity. Boeta Ganief (raḥimahullāh) became very concerned and worried about this.

So, by the Almighty's grace and guidance he endeavored to perform the first Jumu’ah under a tree in the backyard of brother Riedewaan and sister Rhanda (residents) of Genadendal in 2017.

Every Friday he would undertake the 2 hour journey out of Cape Town to ensure the Jumu’ah would be performed. Boeta Ganief (raḥimahullāh) would fetch a few Muslims residing in the nearby town (Greyton) approximately 5 km away, to attend Jumu’ah and then take them back to Greyton again.

Three months prior to his demise he managed to secure the purchase of a property in Genadendal, however, due to property bylaws unique to Genadendal the purchase was cancelled. In January 2021 (after his demise) it was decided to purchase a property in Greyton, which by Allāh's grace and mercy culminated in the establishment of Masjid Ḥanīf.

Construction was underway under the supervision of Moulana Allie Goder of Darun-Na’im who identified the need for a masjid in the location and indeed the founder’s wish was realised. In Ramaḍān 2023, the masjid opened its doors to the community of Genadendal and Greyton and the first official Tarāwīḥ was performed by Moulana Saeed who hails from Cape Town and who is the current appointed Imam of the Masjid Alḥamdulillāh.

May Allāh ‘Azza Wajal reward the founder of Masjid Ḥanīf, all those who contributed and who were instrumental to its establishment, Jannatul Firdous, Amīn Yā Rabbal ‘Ālamīn.
