Success Stories
Institutions founded under Darun-Na'im
The story of students wanting to give back
From amongst our Alumni, there were a handful of students who, after graduating from Darun-Na'im opened up their own institutions bi-ithnillah.
Each of these institutions began under the banner of Darun-Na'im, assisting not only the institutions, but allowing the community to immediately know the origin of the new schools.
Alḥamdulillāh, as the years passed these institutions continued to grow, and left there mark in the community allowing them to spread their wings and stand independently.
This is their story of how they began their journey
Moulana Allie Goder had mentioned to me (Ihsan Abrahams) that, I had encouraged him to start his journey, and in turn he said to me: "I'm not encouraging you, I'm telling you, start your own Ḥafiṭh School".
I took these words to heart, and in 2006 Darun-Na'im li-Tahfeethul Qur'an started by the permission of Allah.
Allāh SWT says in Qur’ān:
﴿وَرَتِّلِ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَرْتِيْلًا﴾
"And recite the Qur’ān with tartīl (in a distinct and measured tone)"
This became the inspiration behind the name as "Tartīl" is associated with Qur’ān.

As a student of Darun-Na’im, I was deeply moved and inspired by the meanings of Qur’ān, I wanted it for every single friend and family member of mine. One day, I spoke to a friend about this journey, and she responded so positively, showing eagerness and interest. When I asked her, why doesn’t she join, she said that she would really love to, but her children are young and as a mother, she needs to be at home with her kids. Upon hearing this, my heart broke and I realized the need for these treasures to be made available, but on a part-time basis. Particularly, so that women like my friend who is a mother of young children could also gain access to the Qur’ān.
After that realization, I offered to teach my friend myself. We met every Friday morning and began the journey through the entire Qur’ān Alḥamdulillāh. Her family saw her homework and asked about what and where she was learning, and they too wanted to join the class. I felt that I couldn't turn anyone away, so I accepted them. And so, the amount of people grew until before I knew it, I had about four or five ladies.
With each new student, I felt the need to start right from the beginning of the grammar syllabus, so that the student wouldn't feel lost, I realized that this is not ideal and decided that I was going to start from the beginning of the syllabus one more time and not stop until I've gone through the entire Qur’ān.
I spoke to my friend about this idea, and she said that I needed to formalize it. However, I felt incapable and unworthy, eventually my friend convinced me, and I now needed to speak to Moulana Allie about it and make it available to more people.
I mentioned to Moulana Allie the idea of starting a class for mothers where I would teach them the Darun-Na’im syllabus and having it run as a branch from Darun-Na’im. Moulana’s response was extremely heartwarming, and he gave me permission to teach Alḥamdulillāh. When I walked into the Darun-Na’im Masjid, I was overwhelmed to find 55 women waiting to be taught bi-ithnillāh.
Allāh SWT says in Qur’ān:
﴿إِذۡ قَالَ يُوسُفُ لِأَبِيهِ يَـٰٓأَبَتِ إِنِّى رَأَيۡتُ أَحَدَ عَشَرَ كَوۡكَبًا وَٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَ رَأَيۡتُهُمۡ لِى سَٰجِدِينَ﴾
Remember when Yusuf (AS) said to his father: “Indeed I see eleven stars, and the sun and the moon prostrating to me.
Allāh SWT describes the family of Nabī Yūsuf (AS) in this dream. Nabī Yūsuf (AS) sees his family bowing down to him. Allāh SWT uses the stars to represent the children, the sun to represent the father, and the moon to represent the mother.
We were so inspired by the mother being described as a moon because, the moon provides light during dark times and how beautiful it is, no matter which phase it is in. This is like the mother who, irrespective to her condition, she is a source of comfort, and a means of light even in the darkest of times.
Inspired by this amazing description of Allāh SWT, we decided to rename the institution to Qamar Institute.

As a student at Darun-Na’im, I was able to witness first hand the transformative effect of studying the Qur’ān directly in the Arabic language.
Darun-Na'im Sunday Intensive which later was called Mizan Institute was started as a continuation of the Darun-Na’im vision that the Qur’ān should be read and understood in every Muslim home.
Mizan Institute specifically offers part-time courses which affords those who are working or studying full-time to undertake the journey of understanding the Quran.
Mizan means balance, equity and justice. Mizan is the balance within the creation of the cosmos, the balance within our existence and it represents the scales that determine our eternal destiny.
Mizan, the balanced way, is essential in a world that is increasingly out of balance. Just as this harmonious balance is evident in the natural world, this mizan needs to be cultivated within each one of us.
As an institute, we aim to maintain this spirit of balance within our teachings and create points of unity and harmony.

As a student of Moulana Allie Goder, it was always impressed upon us to become a positive change agent in the community and to serve for the sake of Allah. With this intention, I became a substitute teacher for a dear friend of mine who taught at Darun-Na'im li-Nisaa at the time, a branch of Darun-Na'im for females only. I was requested to become a substitute for her as she embarked on the beautiful journey of Ḥajj for a period of about 6 weeks.
With much apprehension and nerves, I taught my first formal Qur’ān translation and tafsīr class, and I fell in love immediately. I can still recall that the first surah I taught on that day was surah Isrā, and to this day, the surah occupies a special place in my heart due to this beautiful memory Allah blessed me with.
After teaching Qur’ān for these few weeks, and witnessing the profound impact of the bond between a teacher and a student, I knew with a great sense of clarity that this is what I would love to do if Allāh willed. With the blessing of my teachers, we thus opened Darun-Na'im li-Zuhur in 2011 and the journey continues Alḥamdulillāh.
The name “Zahraa” was chosen as it is derived from the root word za-hi-ra meaning “illumination” or “radiance”. At Zahraa, we aim to connect every woman to the light of the Qur’ān – a light which revives, restores, illuminates and permeates even the most seemingly impenetrable of hearts.
